Until about a hundred years ago, many people believed in strange sea creatures called mermaids. The mermaids had long dark hair, the head and body of a woman, but instead of legs they had the tail of a fish. People believed it was bad luck to see a mermaid. Sailors had a superstition : if you see a mermaid holding a mirror, everybody on the ship will die and the mermaid will take their bodies into the sea. There are many stories about mermaids. In some stories, a mermaid and a man got married. In one story from the Netherlands, a mermaid swam into a river next to the town of Edam. She was confused and couldn't find her way back to the sea again. At first, the people of Edam were very frightened of the mermaid. But after a number of months, they decided to go to the centre of the river and catch her. The mermaid tried to return to the sea many times, but she couldn't. She lived in Edam forma 15 years.
