During the "International Decade of Drinking Water and Environmental Sanitation", from 1981 to 1990, around 1, 300 million people in developing countries were helped to obtain access to drinking water and various UN agencies continue to work to promote sustainable development of fragile and non - renewable water resources in their areas of action.
