He never asks her to visit, but obviously he enjoys her company. How can i encourage him to be a bit more courageous.

If you are the mother, then you should talk to him, and make him know how worthy he is, and than he is good enough to make any woman happy.

You have to make sure that they grow in an ambient where they are constantly being reminded of how great they are, but not too much to make them a narcissist.
