al igual que en las preguntas en tiempo presente donde se usa los verbos "IS y ARE" cuando deseas preguntar sobre - ser o estar - , pues, en pasado debemos emplear los mismos verbos pero en su respectivo tiempo, entonces reemplazando :
Is o am = Was
Are = Were.
Ejemplo :
Si tu preguntabas ; Am I in Arequipa?
Estoy en Arequipa?
En pasado debes decir
Was I in Arequipa yesterday?
Estuve en Arequipa ayer?
Ah, was y Were se emplean para pasados simple, por eso al final de tus preguntas o en tus oraciones debes hacer referencia a un tiempo especifico.

Porque was = era : es algo que ya paso por eso el termino ´´era´´
were = fueron : tambien es en tiempo pasado
