Luckily, my men pulled me back onto the ship before the sharks ate me
completely, but one of the sharks got my leg.

‘And how about the hook on your hand?
How did you lose your hand?

‘I was boarding a ship when another sailor cut off my hand with a sword.
’
‘That’s amazing!
What a life full of adventures!
’ said the young man.
‘And how about
your eye?
How did you lose that?

‘I was eating a grapefruit when the juice went into my eye.

‘But I don’t understand.
How did you lose your eye from the grapefruit juice?

Creo que no he hablado mucho del pasado perfecto aquí, porque en inglés americano no lo usamos demasiado.
Se trata de un tiempo verbal que se usa como el pluscuamperfecto en español.
Si todavía tienes presente la gramática española, sabes qué es el pluscuamperfecto… Se usa para hablar de un momento en el pasado antes de otro momento en el pasado.
El pasado perfecto se forma con el verbo auxiliar had y el participio pasado.
Por ejemplo :
When we arrived at the airport, the plane had already taken off.
La primera parte de la frase es pasado simple, y la segunda es pasado perfecto.
Se trata de algo que pasó antes de que llegáramos al aeropuerto.
Por supuesto, el phrasal verb take off es despegar (entre otras cosas).
Otro ejemplo :
She had already woken up by the time I left.
Traducción al español : ella ya se había despertado cuando yo me fui.
