Esta leyenda sedesarrolla en el Centro Histórico de la hermosa ciudad mexicana de San LuisPotosí, donde puede verse deambular la figura fantasmal de un hombre con unavestimenta estrafalaria ; grandes zapatos sin suela, pantalón roído, un sacoroto, una camisa sucia y un sombrero de copa agujereado, del que puedeobservarse un mechón de cabello que recuerda a la cresta de los gallos.

Eso leda el nombre de Gallo Maldonado, poeta que hace decenas de años sufrió undesamor que lo llevó a estar cara a cara con la muerte.

Luis Maldonado seenamora perdidamente de una hermosa muchacha llamada Eugenia, la cual era debuena familia y parecía corresponderle ; le encantaban sus poemas y le permitíacortejarla sin problemas, surgiendo así un romance que el protagonista pensósería para siempre.

Para su desilusión Eugenia rompe el compromiso y le pideque no la busque más, y luego se entera que el amor de su vida se había casadocon otro hombre de mucho dinero, por lo que se sume en una horrible depresiónque lo lleva a refugiarse en la bebida, descuidando su aspecto hasta perder larazón.

De la nada, eninvierno, lo encuentran muerto en su catre.

Sin embargo, el Gallo Maldonado nose había ido del mundo para siempre…A la familia de Luis lo sorprende alguienque toca en la noche la puerta diciendo que es el mismo Luis, pensaban que eraun chiste pero en realidad era el ánima que desde ese momento deambula por lascalles en pena recitando versos.

Dicen que de vez en cuando parejas que paseanpor el Centro Histórico se encuentran a un vagabundo que les dedica un poema.
