When I (lived / was living) in New York, I was working for an advertising company. I (spent / was spending) my first winter there, and the weather was extremely cold. My boyfriend (came / was coming) to pick me up on Christmas Eve. We (put on / were putting on) warm hats and coats and (were going / went down) to Times Square. It was very romantic because it (snowed / was snowing) and there was a beautiful Christmas tree in the middle of the square. People (rushed / were rushing) along in their heavy clothes, but we just stood still and watched. Then my boyfriend (went / was going down) on one knee. I thought he (wanted / was wanting) to propose, but he (looked / was looking) for his contact lens.
