It contains a suicide note of Hannah Baker, who used to be Clay's crush.

In the package, there a total of seventeen casettes and thirteen stories.

In the first tape, she says why she considers everyone listening to be guilty of what she feels right now.

After listening, everyone has to give the tapes to the next person on the list.

The 13 stories (reasons why) are the following : 1) Hannah's first kiss 2) Alex Standall pitted Hannah and Jessica Davis against each other 3) Jessica Davis was upset by this and hit Hannah, leaving her a scar on the forehead 4) Tyler apparently took picture of Hannah through her window 5) Courtney Crimson started rumors in school that Hannah had sex toys in her bedroom6) After Marcus gets matched up with Hannah through a Valentine's Day survey , Marcus tries to make a move on her in a booth.
