Se utiliza 'there was' y 'there were' para referirse a cosas / cantidad en pasado.
La única diferencia es que usas 'was' cuando es singular y 'were' cuando es plural.
There wasn't y There weren't son únicamente las formas negativas.
Te pondré un ejemplo : - There was a girl in my class (Había una chica en mi clase).
Estoy hablando de una sola chica, así que uso was.
- There were some boxes in my room (Habían algunas cajas en mi cuarto).
Igual, estoy hablando de cajas, uso were.
- There wasn't anyone in home (No había nadie en casa).
- There weren't any cars outside (No habían ningunos carros afuera).
