How to use the perfect past in English

I think I have not talked much about the perfect past here, because in American English we do not use it too much.

It is a verb tense that is used as the pluperfect in Spanish.

If you still have Spanish grammar in mind, you know what the pluperfect is .

It is used to talk about a moment in the past before another moment in the past.

The perfect past is formed with the auxiliary verb had and the past participle.

For example :

When we arrived at the airport, the plane had already taken off.

The first part of the sentence is simple past, and the second is past perfect.

This is something that happened before we arrived at the airport.

Of course, the phrasal verb take off is to take off (among other things).

Another example :

She had already woken up by the time I left.

Spanish translation : she had already woken up when I left.
