It was intuited that atmosphere and ocean had a very important role in the average temperature of the planet and that part of the energy that came from the Sun was, somehow, retained by the atmosphere.

In conclusion, the atmosphere is mainly composed of nitrogen, oxygen, some other trace gases and aerosols that regulate the climate system, by influencing the energy balance between incident solar radiation and emitted terrestrial radiation.
