The book tells the story of Joey, a colt separated from his mother with 6 months, bought by a drunken farmer and bad character, who acquires it for a neighborhood dispute.

Raised as a horse for work on a farm, it is sold to the British army in order to pay off the debts that its owner has accumulated.

Once inside the army the story takes a turn when Joey is transferred to France inside a unit of British cavalry to face the German army in the First World War.

Throughout the story Joey is passing from hand to hand and from one army to another, the author showing us the war from both sides, surviving innumerable hardships, always hoping that Albert, the farmer's son, with whom Joey engages a deep and sincere friendship, keep your word of going to look for it when you could enlist in the army.
